Overwatch Season 5: Doctrine, Sombra Support and your October squad plan

Overwatch Season 5: A Grim Doctrine is scheduled to begin on October 6, 2026. The new vampire-inspired Support, Doctrine, arrives as Doomfist breaks him out of an Icelandic prison. That escape also gives us a new Escort map and sets up the closing chapter of Reign of Talon. But the most immediate surprise for returning players may be a familiar face: Sombra is moving from Damage to Support.

This is a good season to bring an old duo back, provided you agree what you want from the evening. Trying a new Support, learning a map and chasing Competitive wins are different plans. Teamplay helps you describe the kind of game you want and find teammates who are interested in the same thing.

The changes worth opening the game for

  • • A new Support to learn: Doctrine adds healing, drones and empowered abilities to the roster.
  • • Two familiar heroes to relearn: Sombra changes roles; Roadhog receives a new projectile-absorbing ability and a revised weapon.
  • • A new place to fight: Watchpoint: Grímsvötn takes Escort into a volcanic prison.
  • • Halloween with a different rhythm: Graveyard Games introduces random powers and a community vote.
  • • A reason to return beyond launch night: older Battle Pass rewards become available again, with Team Drives later in October.

The hero and map changes were first revealed at BlizzCon. The current Season 5 overview adds the event calendar and reward details. The sections below separate those announcements from our suggestions for your first games.

Doctrine: a Support built around choosing the right moment

Doctrine’s visual identity is hard to miss: a scepter, mechanical bat-like drones and the confidence of someone who has spent far too long locked away. His connection to Doomfist makes him part of the season’s story, rather than a Halloween costume dropped into the roster.

The useful starting point is his official ability sheet. Instead of memorizing every perk immediately, understand the decisions that make the kit work:

  • • Eternal Scepter: the weapon heals allies and damages enemies. Switching attention between them is part of using the same tool.
  • • Infuse: empowers the next ability. Your choice is which effect deserves that enhancement at this moment.
  • • Invigorating Drones: provide healing and attack speed. The infused version also benefits Doctrine himself.
  • • Shrouded Momentum: gives him a movement option; its infused version allows free flight.
  • • Deliverance: his Ultimate gives allies Overhealth while lowering enemy maximum health.

Our first-session suggestion: ask a friend to play a hero they already understand while you learn Doctrine. That gives you a more consistent reference for when your healing arrives, when the drone effect is useful and whether you are spending too much attention on damage. Change one thing between games, rather than treating every loss as a verdict on the new hero.

For a duo, the interesting question is when to commit together. Tell your partner which ally you are supporting and when you intend to use an empowered ability. A clear call is more useful than assuming they have noticed a new visual effect in the middle of a fight. This is a practice approach, not a claim that Doctrine has a proven best partner or mandatory composition.

Sombra and Roadhog: your old habits need a second look

Sombra now occupies a Support slot

A returning Sombra player should start by checking the new kit, not by reproducing an old Damage routine. The official sheet identifies her as a Support Tactician. Hotfix provides healing, while Cyberspace combines an allied healing area with Weaken against enemies. Her information and mobility tools still matter, but keeping a teammate alive is now part of her job.

That role change also affects your group before the first fight: decide who is taking each role again. A friend who used to fill Damage with Sombra cannot be counted as the same role selection. If you are learning the rework together, pay attention to whether your teammates can make use of your support when you move away from them.

Roadhog gains a new defensive decision

Roadhog’s revised Scrap Gun fires two bursts per volley, and Trash Compactor absorbs incoming projectiles before returning an explosive shot. The official description ties the return shot’s damage to what was absorbed.

The practice question is straightforward: what did you choose to catch, and what happened afterward? Review that moment with your Support rather than only counting eliminations. Do not assume that “absorbs projectiles” means immunity to every form of damage; the launch notes and actual ability interactions are the place to check those limits.

Watchpoint: Grímsvötn makes the story playable

The new Escort map is an Icelandic volcanic prison, previously an Overwatch Watchpoint and later controlled by Helix. Doomfist’s return to free Doctrine connects its setting directly to the season’s story. The contrast between frozen surroundings and the prison’s heat gives this update a location of its own.

Your first visit does not need to be a tour of every corridor. Pick one recurring question: where do we lose sight of each other? When a push fails, compare where your front line went with where the back line could still see it. That gives your next attempt a specific adjustment, even before you know every route by name.

For returning friends, say in advance whether the first few games are for exploration. It prevents one player from studying the environment while another expects everyone to already know the quickest rotation. Save specific callouts as your group discovers them; there is no need to invent a complete map guide from a promotional image.

Halloween: Graveyard Games rewards a different kind of curiosity

Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games runs October 6 to November 2. Random heroes gain random powers after deaths. Challenges award Offerings for a vote on Ashe, Moira or Winston; the mode’s roster expands during the event. Weekly Event Passes provide another set of goals.

Treat this as a separate evening from learning your standard role. When powers change, the plan you agreed on a moment ago may need changing too. A useful voice call is “here is what I can do now,” followed by one thing the group can try together. That is more practical than expecting the same coordination you use in Competitive.

Before you start a reward-focused session, look at the current challenge conditions together. Some event progression can happen outside the limited-time mode, but do not assume every objective is interchangeable. If a friend only has half an hour, choose a shared objective you can actually pursue in that time.

Unvaulted Passes: what returning players can recover

Revised Battle Passes from Seasons 1–15 return through Unvaulted Passes. Previous progress carries over; one active Unvaulted Pass can progress alongside the current season’s pass. Acquired Unvaulted Passes do not expire.

Check the exclusions before purchasing: these passes omit Coins, XP Boosts, Mythic Prisms, Prestige Titles, and Mythic Hero or Weapon skins. They are not a way to recover every original season reward.

Start with the reward preview for the season you missed, then compare it with the progress already recorded on your account. That is a better decision than purchasing because you recognize an old theme. A partially completed pass may be more interesting to you than a completely untouched one, but the rewards you actually want should decide.

The selectable-track system is already an existing feature

If you skipped Season 4, there is another change to catch up on. Blizzard’s Battle Pass revamp arrived on August 11: the 80 tiers are divided into shorter tracks, and you choose their order after the introductory track. You can switch the active track. Premium also introduced a Tier Hack for a reward from a curated replacement pool.

Season 5 uses that system; it did not introduce it. For a returning player, the benefit is choosing an early goal around a hero you actually play. Check the current pool and eligible rewards rather than relying on a guide written for the Season 4 selection.

Shadow Monarch and Mythics: the season’s cosmetic side

Overwatch x Shadow Monarch is scheduled for October 6–19. The lineup includes Genji as Sung Jinwoo and Reaper as Igris, alongside Anran, Reinhardt and Lifeweaver collaborations. These are cosmetic crossovers, separate from the announced hero reworks.

Dragon Shaoxia Wuyang and the Treblemaker Lúcio weapon are the new Mythic highlights. The separate Tech Witches collection is listed for October 9–26. If cosmetics bring your friends back, that can be the invitation; the session still needs a shared game mode and pace once everyone logs in.

The October dates to plan around

Overwatch Season 5 calendar: launch October 6; Graveyard Games October 6–November 2; Shadow Monarch October 6–19; Tech Witches October 9–26; Team Drives October 29–November 1.

Teamplay calendar based on the current Blizzard season overview, checked October 6. The announcement gives date windows, not exact regional start and end times.

Team Drives gives you a second reason to build a group

Team Drives returns October 29 to November 1. Complete Competitive placements first. The announcement says winning matched teammates remain together for the next game, and keeping a team together helps progression through Gladiator Ranks.

Use the weeks before that window to find people whose approach fits yours. Can you discuss a lost fight without turning the next one into an argument? Do you want the same session length? Are your role preferences compatible? Those questions matter when deciding whether to keep playing together, whatever rewards the event offers.

You do not need to turn a casual first meeting into a Competitive commitment. Try a session together, exchange one piece of useful feedback, and make the next plan if everyone wants it. Confirm the event’s exact local timing in game before booking the final evening.

A first-night plan that leaves room to learn

  1. 1. Choose one goal: learn Doctrine, revisit Sombra or Roadhog, explore Grímsvötn, or play the Halloween mode. Let that goal decide the queue.
  2. 2. Agree roles before entering: especially if your usual Sombra player is returning after a break.
  3. 3. Keep one familiar reference: have a teammate use a comfortable hero while you test a changed one. It makes the feedback easier to interpret.
  4. 4. Review one moment: name a fight where your timing or positioning changed the outcome, and decide what to try next.
  5. 5. Set the next session: if the group works, choose a date and an objective rather than leaving it at “we should play again.”

Find an Overwatch squad with the same plan

It is frustrating to queue for a relaxed hero-learning evening and discover that your teammates expected a serious rank push. Put the plan in your Teamplay request so people can decide whether it suits them before joining.

  • • The game you want: a casual Season 5 introduction, hero practice, Halloween challenges or a Competitive session.
  • • The people you need: preferred roles, experience level or rank where relevant, platform, region and language.
  • • The time you have: date, time zone, session length and whether you want voice chat.

For a first session, you might describe a returning-player duo learning Doctrine and Support Sombra, then state the time and roles still available. You can use teammate requests, arrange sessions and talk in voice chat on Teamplay. Open the form, choose Overwatch, and describe your plan.
